Lyrics:

You are here. You were lost at first, but soon began sketching yourself a map of the world, plotting. you have to contend with the blank spaces on the map. The experiences you've never had. The part of you still aching to know what's out there. All the billions of doors closed in order to take a single step forward. All the things you haven't done - You may never get around to doing them all the risks that may have been real Or not All the destinations you went to Or not the lights you see in the distance that you can only wonder about The part of you still aching to know what's out there. Everything you've giving up, to be where you are right now the questions that you wrongly assumed were unanswerable. Just one body, inhabiting only one place at a time like standing in front of the departures screen at an airport, flickering over each representing one more thing you’ll never get to see before you die— all the risks that may have been real Or not All the destinations you went to Or not the lights you see in the distance that you can only wonder about The part of you still aching to know what's out there. Everything you've giving up, to be where you are right now the questions that you wrongly assumed were unanswerable. We sketch monsters on the map cause we find their presence comforting. They guard the edges of the abyss, and force us to look away so we can live comfortably in the Known World, at least for a little while. (said): But if someone were to ask you, on your deathbed what it was like to live here on Earth, perhaps the only honest answer would be, "I don't know. I passed through it once, but I've never really been there." You are here. You were lost at first, but soon began sketching yourself a map of the world, plotting your life. you have to contend with the blank spaces on the map. The part of you still aching to know what's out there. Everything you've giving up, to be where you are right now the questions that you wrongly assumed were unanswerable.

Story:

I wanted to capture the feeling of being both lost and found in the world. The opening lines describe a sense of disorientation, but quickly shift to a sense of purpose and agency: "You were lost at first, but soon began sketching yourself a map of the world, plotting." Throughout the piece, I explore the idea of blank spaces on the map, both literal and metaphorical. These are the experiences we've never had, the risks we haven't taken, the questions we haven't answered. The repeated lines of "The part of you still aching to know what's out there" speak to a sense of longing and curiosity that drives us forward, even when we're not sure where we're going. The section about sketching monsters on the map is meant to be a metaphor for the ways in which we create stories and myths to help us make sense of the unknown. These monsters guard the edges of the abyss, allowing us to live comfortably in the known world, but also limiting our ability to explore and discover. The final lines of the piece are intentionally ambiguous, leaving open the question of what it means to truly "be there" in the world. The idea that we may never really know what it's like to live on Earth is both humbling and inspiring, suggesting that there is always more to discover and explore, even in the face of our own mortality.
